Licensed Content PILOTS RUNNING FALL 2010
To address the growing concerns over the high prices of textbooks, the
Digital Marketplace is offering digital access to licensed publisher
content, at dramatically lower costs to students.
Currently, instructors at participating institutions opt-in to the program that allows students in their section(s) to license digital versions of their course material for a fraction of the price currently charged for new and used textbooks. The DM provides the enabling delivery services to interested institutions. Content providers include Bedford/Freeman/Worth, Cengage Learning, McGraw-Hill Education, Pearson, and John Wiley & Sons.
The Program At-A-Glance:
- Over 30 instructors and 4000+ students are participating in the pilot this fall (2010).
- Five participating campuses this fall (2010): Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, San Bernardino and San Francisco State. Three additional campuses for spring 2011: Chico, Fresno and Northridge.
- Choice: instructors have the ability to opt-in to the program and students can choose between a licensed content section with the lower-cost digital content, or a traditional section.
- Affordability: this program offers students the lowest price available for the licensed, digital version of their course materials, at up to 65% off of the print book.
- Early findings: 74% of students in pilot sections purchased their learning materials as opposed to 46% in the non-pilot sections. This behavior bodes well for improved learning outcomes.
- Next Steps: Phase 2 of the Licensed Content Pilot will be conducted in Spring 2011. (see Phase 2 Summary (doc))
